When the agricultural utilization is stopped, secondary succession processes are initiated. Secondary succession comprise mostly of transformation in vegetation and soil properties. The examination conducted in Lubelska Upland (Krasnystaw area) on various types of land use: forest, agriculture and abandoned lands (for 5 and 20 years) involved indication of soil reaction, organic carbon content and cation exchange capacity in soil horizons. The results showed that the most dynamic changes were noticed within the soil reaction in upper horizons, while the least dynamic were noticed within cation exchange capacity. Land use abandonment causes reduction in pH level, organic carbon content and alkaline cation content in soil sorption complex.
