Podziemne stacje metra jako fragment miejskiej przestrzeni publicznej
This paper presents the issues related to the functioning of underground metro stations as important components of urban public space. The problems of definition and design of contemporary public spaces are discussed based on the literature review. Next, the analysis of selected metro stations outlines planning and architectural practices that can contribute towards developing new quality of urban space allowing for the coexistence of various activities. The analysis reveals that the construction of metro network can stimulate the development of new attractive places with diverse functionality, both above and under the ground level. Public space inside and in the surroundings of contemporary metro stations increasingly attracts users, not only due to journey plans, but also due to the leisure opportunities.
