Family as the primary educational environment plays a crucial role in developing children’s
awareness: it supports, motivates, and participates in the development of their sporting
habits and healthy way of life. The survey respondents included 2749 first-year junior
secondary school pupils in Lodz (n= 2749). Analyses of the survey were conducted for the
city districts and aimed to find statistically significant variables that may have a considerable
impact on pupils’ participation in sport activities. In the district of Bałuty, survey results
reveal that only 33.5 per cent of parents frequently spend their leisure time actively with
their children; 53.8 per cent do it sometimes, while as many as 12.8 per cent never do it. The
primary reasons for children’s loneliness include lack of time, lack of interest, and tiredness
of their parents (47 per cent) or children’s unwillingness to spend leisure time with their
parents (18 per cent).
Parents’ organizational activities include praising children and expressing satisfaction
with their participation in sports – 50.4 per cent; awarding and supporting them – 7.2 and
26.4 per cent respectively. As many as 16 per cent of parents are indifferent in this respect.
